Teams will compete to design the best project, and will be judged by an independent jury of experts. Since 2008, the European Forum Alpbach has also organised the English-language Summer School ‘Health Care and Social Systems’. Participants will be engaged in an in-depth learning experience, attending stimulating lectures on relevant aspects of space science and engineering, and working intensely within four groups to define and design a space mission under the supervision of noted scientific and engineering experts.

University students and young graduates have until 31 March 2019 to apply. The teams select a mission concept based on the information provided in the lectures and their own knowledge of the topic. By these means, a consistent set of design parameters can be defined and exchanged throughout the study, and any changes which may have an impact on other disciplines can immediately be identified and collectively assessed. They will need to balance scientific objectives and requirements with the realistic constraints of mission design, spacecraft design, and mission cost. Each student team will conceive and elaborate an innovative satellite mission and present it to an expert review panel on the last day. The lectures will provide the scientific and technical background needed for defining and elaborating innovative space missions and to select and formulate observational objectives, new satellite missions to advance the understanding of the behaviour and the coupling processes of plasma at several astrophysical scales.

Essentially, CE provides a collaborative, co-operative, collective and simultaneous engineering working environment, in which the participants are split in different disciplines following their area of expertise.
