There was a strong demand for the yarn which Crompton was making at Hall i' th' Wood but he lacked the means to take out a patent. The mule-jenny later became known as the spinning mule. Invented in the 18th century by Samual Crompton, the innovative machine spun textile fibers into yarn using an intermittent process that transformed the way yarn was manufactured, making the process much faster, easier—and more profitable. In 1775 Crompton produced his spinning mule, so called because it was a hybrid that combined features of two earlier inventions, the Spinning Jenny and the Water Frame. Despite the success of the mule, Samuel Crompton was unable to patent his design and made very little money from it. A spinning mule is a device that is an essential part of the textile industry. It is the only surviving spinning mule made by its inventor, Samuel Crompton. But this also meant textile manufacturers no longer needed to pay individual spinners to create spindles (wooden rods) wound with cotton thread, as just one operator could now use the machine to spin hundreds of spindles at once. The carriage carried up to 1,320 spindles and could be 150 feet (46 m) long, and would move forward and back a distance of 5 feet (1.5 m) four times a minute. Its connection to the history of slavery, however, was not fully recognised until the commemoration of the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade in 2007. The spinning mule was invented by Samuel Crompton in 1779.
