crompton's mule

The self-acti… The expansion of cotton production across Lancashire provided work for thousands of people and generated a huge amount of wealth. The mule produced a strong, fine and soft yarn which could be used in all kinds of textiles, but was particularly suited to the production of muslins. Mules were worked in pairs by a minder, with the help of two boys: the little piecer and the big or side piecer.

There was a strong demand for the yarn which Crompton was making at Hall i' th' Wood but he lacked the means to take out a patent. The mule-jenny later became known as the spinning mule. Invented in the 18th century by Samual Crompton, the innovative machine spun textile fibers into yarn using an intermittent process that transformed the way yarn was manufactured, making the process much faster, easier—and more profitable. It revolutionised textile production by vastly increasing the amount of cotton that could be spun at any one time. This object may not always be on display. This object may not always be on display. It was capable of producing high quantities of fine, strong cotton yarn, and during the early 1800s revolutionised the British cotton industry, heralding the start of the cotton boom. The application of the mule to industry massively increased the amount of cotton yarn manufacturers could produce, which in turn increased demand for raw cotton to supply the mills. Object number 1886.50 Given by Dobson and Barlow of Bolton. Dobson and Barlow exported machinery all over the world, and employed large numbers of local people. This led to an increase in cotton production by the slave system, and a parallel boom developed in the plantations of the southern states of America. It was invented between 1775 and 1779 by Samuel Crompton. They were used extensively from the late 18th to the early 20th century in the mills of Lancashire and elsewhere.

Samuel Crompton, an English inventor and pioneer of the spinning industry, successfully invented the spinning mule in 1779. In 1775 Crompton produced his spinning mule, so called because it was a hybrid that combined features of two earlier inventions, the Spinning Jenny and the Water Frame. It was known as the muslin wheel or the Hall i' th' Woodwheel, from the name of the house in which he and his family now lived. He eventually died in poverty in 1827. It was not until after his death that Crompton's contribution to industry was recognised. Have your say, A partnership project from eight museums in Greater Manchester, Made by Samuel Crompton, about 1802 Wood, iron About 1779, Samuel Crompton succeeded in producing a mule-jenny, a machine which spun yarn suitable for use in the manufacture of muslin. As a youth Crompton spun cotton on a spinning jenny for his family; its defects inspired him to try to invent a better device. This mule was made by Crompton in about 1802 and ended up in the possession of the Bolton firm of Dobson and Barlow, manufacturers of cotton machinery. The spinning mule is a machine used to spin cotton and other fibres. This information was provided by curators at Bolton Museum and Archive Service. Samuel Crompton, (born Dec. 3, 1753, Firwood, near Bolton, Lancashire, Eng.—died June 26, 1827, Bolton), British inventor of the spinning mule, which permitted large-scale manufacture of high-quality thread and yarn. Despite the success of the mule, Samuel Crompton was unable to patent his design and made very little money from it. A spinning mule is a device that is an essential part of the textile industry. It is the only surviving spinning mule made by its inventor, Samuel Crompton. Crompton gained the status of a local hero in Bolton and this machine was displayed in Bolton Museum for the education of local people, many of whom themselves worked in the cotton industry. But this also meant textile manufacturers no longer needed to pay individual spinners to create spindles (wooden rods) wound with cotton thread, as just one operator could now use the machine to spin hundreds of spindles at once. Crompton developed the mule in 1779, so called because it combined two previous spinning machines, the water frame and the spinning jenny. The carriage carried up to 1,320 spindles and could be 150 feet (46 m) long, and would move forward and back a distance of 5 feet (1.5 m) four times a minute. During the period 1781-1791, the first decade of the mule’s use, the amount of raw cotton supplied to Britain more than tripled.

Its connection to the history of slavery, however, was not fully recognised until the commemoration of the bicentenary of the abolition of the slave trade in 2007. The spinning mule was invented by Samuel Crompton in 1779.
