James Ivory’s Howards End makes its debut on Blu-ray through The Criterion Collection, presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.35:1 on this dual-layer Blu-ray disc. Quite different from her children and her in-laws, who tend to be venal and small-minded, Ruth is passionate: she’s in love with English tradition in general and with the property at Howards End—which belongs to her, not her husband—in particular. If it can be said that one performance is the heart of Howards End, it would have to be Thompson’s. What really struck me about 'Howard's End' this time around was its bold editorial choices.

I was actually amazed at how uninterested it appears Ivory was in the book Howards End (he states at the beginning there was only one scene in the book he really liked and it never made it into the film) but it appears once Ismail pointed Ivory towards the book he just slipped right in. "Several Months Later," as the austere title card suggests, the Wilcoxes are in London for the marriage of another son, and are living across the street from the Schlegels. Now on Blu-Ray and beautiful. I would not be surprised if there is a re-pressing so to speak of this Criterion release in the future. It's just a gorgeous film and an absolutely glorious adaptation.
