I originally borrowed all four books from the SMSA Library, but found myself such a big fan of John Puller that after returning the books, I bought my own copies to read and keep. Probably not one of Baldacci’s best books but still a very good read. As good a writer as he is, he just doesn't pull it off like Lee Child can.

Its as though Baldacci was being paid by the word as apposed to writing a tight cohesive novel that I've grown accustomed to reading. The problem was the acronyms for me. So when a family with military connections is brutally murdered in a remote area of West Virginia, Puller is called to investigate, and soon suspects the case has wider implications. As always, the bad guys eventually get their just desserts, but sometimes the good guys are among the fallen too. Baldacci has equivalent franchises to other authors and his hero John Puller seems to be almost the same as Jack Reacher, a military super cop, hero. Being the best at your job is a blessing and a curse. The main character, Puller, reminded me of Lee Child's Jack Reacher character. The main character is a CID (Criminal Investigation Division) agent named John Puller.

The 1st 100 pages was good but then the pace didn't seem to pick up, for a thriller it was quite unexciting. The events in the first novel are quite frighteningly realistic (think 9-11), the events in the second novel start with his father’s elderly sister being murdered for seeing something appallingly illegal occur, and I’m still engrossed in book three, with book four on my table to follow immediately. Or not. His latest case takes him out to coal country in West Virginia where a family has been slaughtered. He's enlisted army and he's an investigator of crime scenes with military ties.
