To download and install LUNA Instruments and Extensions: Open the LUNA Sidebar by clicking the UA diamond logo on the left of the screen, and click Manage, or choose LUNA > Preferences from the app menu, and choose Manage. Luna can host plug-in instruments, and UA has created a new bespoke format so that it can package its own exclusive instruments for Luna (these rely on native processing just as AU instruments do). While not revolutionary, Luna’s layout is logically organized, allows you to show or hide just about everything, and the graphic designers somehow managed to marry skeuomorphism and 2D modernity in an agreeable fashion. These can be created in mono or stereo channel configurations but right now there is no multi-channel surround support. What’s wonderful about Luna, though, is that managing instruments and extensions (and their licenses) is built in. Others should wait a couple of iterations till UA's rival to Pro Tools matures.

The downside is that $1400 buys you only two simultaneous input channels and the pay-to-play plug-ins aren't cheap either. Get the punch and rich textures of magnetic tape on any audio or instrument track — as well as your master fader and buses — with optional Studer A800 and Ampex ATR-102 LUNA Extensions.

The audio engine can re-sample and play anything from 44.1kHz to 192kHz on the fly, while background rendering creates files matching the current project sample rate that will be used eventually to reduce the processing overhead this rate juggling incurs. The system relies on the presence of one or more of these interfaces, as it’s designed to integrate tightly with the hardware’s features and capabilities. Licenses for extensions do link with UAD-2 plug-in licenses, though, so you aren’t forced to choose one over the other when taking a shopping trip to the UA store.
