Mafia: Definitive Edition follows a string of successful remakes that include Resident Evil 3, Trials of Mana, Final Fantasy VII, or Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2. The Mafia Trilogy is, at the very least, two pretty good games and one not very good game for the price of one game. It's a valuable side-plot to the warring gangs, and ends up more important. The games writing and voice work is top-notch which is a staple for the franchise.

One moment that truly made me upset is the mob war between the Salieri family and the Morello family. Cars do tend to slide around turns a bit due to their weight but are much easier to control in this remake. His story is actually told through a series of flashbacks shared with a detective that Angelo meets in the present day. There is even an option to turn off none essential driving. Prohibition era mobster dramas tend to mostly hit the same notes, and Mafia doesn't really deviate in that regard. Moments, like when Tommy has a child, is simply just mentioned as is Tommy’s drinking problem which we never really see and is never talked about until its simply mentioned. What makes this remake so good is the love and attention Hanger 13 have taken to deliver the definitive edition of a title that a lot of people may have missed and a title that gave birth to the Mafia franchise. He does this with none English speaking Italian, and watching the two of them try and communicate when things start to get harry is very entertaining. Dialogue rewrites so things are less stilted, some needless travel eliminated, altered sections to keep the pacing breezy -- it's a lot of finesse that makes this a better game will still paying proper tribute to Mafia. Speaking of bugs, I encountered a couple of clipping issues during my playthrough, with my character falling through the floor in some rare circumstances.

This should appeal more to fans of the original Mafia game, which wasn’t really an easy game. I also enjoyed another mission where you have to break into a massive house to search for a safe hidden behind a painting, aided by an old, clumsy-looking Italian burglar that can barely speak English. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the storytelling is generally great and some missions are truly memorable. Oozing with 1930s atmosphere, Mafia: Definitive Edition is a successful rejuvenation of the best story in the series. Mafia: Definitive Edition places shootouts in some lovely-looking locations – from a highly-detailed art gallery to a dark, abandoned farm during a heavy storm, and from a bullet-riddled Italian restaurant to an old-timey parking garage – but it is all quite conventional.
