Completing these will give you useful blueprints related to that specialization — the Armorer gives you Multi-tool-related blueprints, for example — and move you along through the base-building side missions. Later, you’ll get a lot more out of your bases by building Specialist Terminals and hiring Specialists. Once you have a few pieces of Salvaged Technology, build a Blueprint Analyzer from your Portable Technology menu. You can use the Construction Research Unit to acquire new blueprints using Salvaged Data, which you can find on most planets. Normally, putting Sodium into a Portable Refiner results in Sodium Nitrate at a ratio of one unit of Sodium Nitrate output per two units of Sodium input (2:1). A similar thing happens with a Storage Container at the end of a Straight Corridor. None of these quests are strictly necessary, as, at this point, you can just devote yourself to designing your base the way you want it. For every two units of Sodium and one unit of Condensed Carbon that go into the Large Refiner, we receive six units of Sodium Nitrate out (2:6). If you want something a little fancier and more useful, you’ll need to follow a main story mission. Biofuel Reactors, Solar Panels, and Batteries. Some doors will have outlets on either side so your cables don’t have to go through the wall. With Copper in hand, you can convert it into the Chromatic Metal that you need to build your Base Computer. That’s also why it’s a good idea to have the carbon you need already on hand. If you’re committed to getting the best technology possible for your base, though, you’ll want to make these quests a priority. The large refiner will also let you start making some of the more exotic or difficult to find elements — like Phosphorus or Dioxite — on your own. These generate power during daylight hours (which makes sense). You’ll get more useful technology and can even start producing your own valuable resources — like Gravitino Balls — to sell or use. This will let you trade in your Salvaged Technology for new base parts and materials. This unlocks a lot of new recipes. Interacting with a Biofuel Reactor, Solar Panel, or Battery will open a readout about your base’s Power Grid. You’ll need some Chromatic Metal to build it — which you can make from Copper in a Portable Refiner. If you’re concerned with aesthetics, try creating junctions by stopping your wires short, then run longer wires along walls (just like an extension cord). When you plug them in to grid, the entire room gets power.
Base building in No Man’s Sky Beyond has gotten a little more complicated. There’s nothing wrong with having a Base Computer (and a Teleporter, if you have the option) and nothing else. Once you have a Base Computer set up and you claim a location, that base becomes available as a destination from the Teleporters on Space Stations. (If you don’t see the option to build a Base Computer yet, continue along the Artemis storyline and warp to a couple more systems, then check again.). There are a few rules of thumb, though: You’ll find the means to generate power in your Tech > Power & Industry > Power construction menu. To activate another, arguably more important, set of base-related missions, you’ll need to contain the game’s story missions as well. If you come across a planet that has rare resources or anything else you want to have access to later, it’s good practice to simply set up a Base Computer and a Teleporter so that you can always find your way back. After repairing your crashed ship and heading out into space for the first time, you’ll receive a signal from a nearby planet, and upon landing, you’ll find a crashed probe that’s emitting the signal. A lot of the game’s early quests hinge on returning to your base to expand it, though, so you should choose a location that you’re willing to spend some time in. That’s where you get to build your own Trade Hub and Landing Pad and start getting blueprints just handed to you. Any technology you add that is integrated into the room — like teleport modules or storage containers — will get power automatically. To buffer yourself against outages, you’ll also want to build a Battery. Follow the Artemis storyline until it becomes the Apollo storyline. You’ll keep earning technologies to make base building easier and more rewarding as you progress, but you now have access to all the basic tools and techniques you need to build your dream base in No Man’s Sky. With your base now staffed and all the relevant quests underway, all that’s left to do is build to your heart’s content. You’ll also gain access to three useful pieces of Portable Technology as you expand your base. You can get as involved as you want with your first building, but if you just want to get on with the quest, a single floor tile with walls, a doorway, and a roof will do the trick. The technologies you gain from Specialists become increasingly advanced and often require lots of time spent traveling from planet to planet to find the resources you need to complete them. You’ll need to use the Terrain Manipulator to dig up the materials you need for the Base Computer, so focus on that first. Building one is simple enough, but you’ll also need to power it. The basic version is a Biofuel Reactor. Collect some more Salvaged Data, and you’ll unlock Solar Panels. Building a base in No Man’s Sky only requires a Base Computer. You can, however, get right to Teleporting (more on this below), and that will cut a lot of time off of your commutes to and from Space Stations and between planets (and systems). Using your scanner, look for a Buried Technology Module — it’s got a two-bars-of-wifi-like icon. Building a base in No Man’s Sky only requires a Base Computer. Make your way to them, and dig them up with your Terrain Manipulator.
There’s (yet) another currency in No Man’s Sky when you want to expand your base building options. Setting up near an existing settlement with a landing pad will save you on expensive maintenance costs, as taking off from one doesn’t burn valuable Launch Thruster fuel, and doing so could also provide you with neighbors to trade with. Just open up your portable technology crafting menu, place a Portable Refiner, and turn some of that Copper into 30 Chromatic Metal. No Man’s Sky next major update has finally arrived and it’s introducing co-op into this massive, open-world game.
