My only criticism is that I thought there could have been more development of characters - their psychology, their thought processes - and more description of people and places generally, but that is my personal preference. The inclusion of a visit to Nelson Mandela’s house was enlightening and the quote of his speech resonated with me during these uneasy times. No laughs, no drama, no edge. This story is exquisite perfection. Wow, thank you so much for this stunning review. By 1944 I could tell terrible things were happening . I literally couldn’t put this book down, if I could have given The Secret Letter by Kerry Barrett more than give stars I would most certainly have done so. I believe the description means to say, "to avoid risking the lives of her family", doesn't it?

It grabbed me from the get go, but the more I became involved in the story, I just kind of got bored with it. I felt Rachel’s pain as she dealt with several events life sends her way and her dependency on the mysterious letters to gain strength and move forward. I lived every word. She usually ignored the uninteresting brown envelopes that slipped through the letter box. It's so hard to imagine the suffering millions of people had to endure, such a special, brave and resilient generation they are/were.

This novel is one which was a little difficult to get into; but once you got started, it turned out to be a page-turner which could not be put down. The sense of time and place is, as with all her books, just perfect. It was interesting to read about German life during the Second World War, but the whole think seemed a bit superficial to me. This book is amazing, you need to read it. The Secret Letter: Gripping and Heartbreaking WW2 Historical Fiction was written by Debbie Rix. She rejects the support of his brother Ruari – well placed to help her, and who plainly cares for her – but places trust in supportive letters from a complete stranger. ( Log Out /  Rix is an excellent storyteller and this was an excellent read. While she is forced to join the Hitler Youth, she is horrified when her friend Lotte is sent to a concentration camp. Hitler, the Hitler Youth, the SS...all so terrifying as they were so full of hatred and anger. I liked the way the chapters alternated between a young girl in England and another in Germany, comparing and contrasting their experiences, and the way their two stories came together. It gripped me from the first chapter when Rachel was introduced to the last page as it follows her recovery from traumatic events and the romantic possibilities threaded throughout.

But I love the stories of the people who survived that terrible war and their resilience to carry on despite the sad things they saw and lived through. Mum was a WREN, and as I read these pages, I really wanted to talk to her about her experiences, and our thoughts on this book - something that has never happened before. The coincidence was a bit much to believe as well ...... Magda met Imogen’s love, Freddie, whilst Imogen got to know Magda’s brother, Karl. In spite of her arthritis, she bent down slowly and retrieved it, along with the pile of bills, and carried them through to the con. I did not like how it ended though, and now I am reading the sequel to see if it really ended like that for Victoria. That just didn't ring true. To see what your friends thought of this book, An air of mystery wraps you into this book as Victoria receives what appears to be a chain letter for a high school reunion. The Secret Letter is a beautiful novel, inspired by a true story, about bravery, kindness and hope in a time of war, devastation and absolute horror. A wonderful story, masterfully written.
