I love how you get to know the characters more in depth in this installment, it’s impossible not to form attachments to the characters and fall in love with them. I’m really tempted to take a cheap shot at Margaret Atwood and call her the George Lucas of literature since I was very disappointed in this follow-up to Oryx & Crake. When Year of the Flood opens, Toby and Ren have both survived Crake’s flood, and it is the twenty-fifth year since the cult God’s Gardeners was formed. As it is, I must restrict myself to the vocabulary and expectations suitable to a realistic novel, even if forced by those limitations into a less favourable stance.

Perhaps this is an inevitable consequence of where this fits in the timeline of the trilogy with its need to fill in some of the background to the "Waterless Flood". That kind of subtle variation not only suggests differences between the two narrators - Toby older, less exposed, less febrile than Ren - it also offers to us as readers a variation of pace and perspective that makes this heady novel surprisingly easy to read.
