VIIRS is not processed to the same degree as MODIS, and while VIIRS may appear to have higher sensitivity, the higher sensitivity appears to be correlated with a higher number of "false-positive" detections. VIIRS data is used to measure cloud and aerosol properties, ocean color, sea and land surface temperature, ice motion and temperature, fires, and Earth's albedo.
