what is the bright planet in the sky tonight

Note: What you can see in the night sky often depends on your own location on planet Earth. It’s an incredible sight!

In 2020, the New Moon will occur on the following dates: You can use websites like Moon Giant to keep track of the phases of the Moon. August 11-12, Perseids: The Perseids constitute one of the best-known and most enjoyable meteor showers in the Northern Hemisphere. This ringed planet has inspired countless people to fall in love with astronomy. A fabulously bright, white object shining at magnitude -4.1, Venus has cloud-tops, which make it hugely reflective.

In 2019, for instance, both the Perseid and Geminid meteor showers hit their peak shortly before or after a Full Moon, which meant that they weren’t as spectacular as they could have been. March 20, Conjunction of Mars and Jupiter. It’s an icy world located in the Kuiper Belt and has five known moons. Try your hand at finding the planets, get your friends together to view an eclipse, or chill out in a camp chair as you watch a meteor shower. At that time the planet in question is as close as it gets (just 0.4 au), so bigger, and because it’s 100% illuminated from our point of view, it’s as bright as it can be in our night sky. So, why pay attention to when the New Moon is? Meteors should be visible all night long and at their best around 2am. July 29-30, Southern Delta Aquariids: This shower is another good one to catch if you’re in the Southern Hemisphere. Uranus is also quite large, around four times wider than Earth. It’s important information that helps me plan some of my stargazing. In 2020, look for Neptune in the constellation Aquarius. The Whole Sky images show the entire sky as a big round picture. November 29-30, penumbral lunar eclipse: Look out for this eclipse if you live in eastern Asia, Australia, North America, or South America. I'm an experienced science, technology and travel journalist and stargazer writing about exploring the night sky, solar and lunar eclipses, moon-gazing, astro-travel. March 24: greatest western elongation (view in eastern sky before sunrise). THE EVENING SKY IN OCTOBER. Consult this chart to trace Mars’ movements over the second half of 2020. The best views of Jupiter will occur on July 14 when it reaches opposition to the Sun. For a longer list of 2020 astronomical events, check out this calendar. Aries will be in the constellation of Aries the Ram during 2020. Mars is brilliant in the evening sky this month and even outshines the giant planet Jupiter which is also in the evening sky. It’s actually only about 70% illuminated at the time of writing, but it’s still comfortably the brightest planet of all. In fact, there aren’t any really bright stars visible right now. Head to a dark place after midnight to try to spot meteors. To accentuate its redness, try slightly defocusing your binoculars or squint your eyes. Mars opens 2020 in the constellation Libra, where it will remain until January 7. Which direction should you look to find Mercury? The Ursids aren’t as flashy and dramatic as the Geminids just a week before, but I’m fond of them nonetheless. I suggest checking In-The-Sky to get precise timings for your precise location. Keep an eye out for it on the following dates: Venus is one of the brighter objects visible in the sky, which should help you locate it even without the assistance of a telescope. After all, Saturn—also at opposition in July 2020—is 9.5 au from us. For most months of 2020, there is at least one night when you can use the Moon as your anchor to locate Saturn, which will appear nearby. It is either visible just before sunrise or just after sunset. If you want a quick reference for later, check out this chart, which indicates, at a glance, whether a particular planet is visible on a given morning or night.

Similar to Mercury, it tends to appear either in the morning (before sunrise) or evening (after sunset) rather than throughout the night or at midnight. When will Venus be completely invisible? Where possible throughout this guide, I specify where you need to be to see various events, eclipses, etc. The Horizon pictures are a bit simpler, but you need more than one to cover the entire sky and they do not show the sky directly overhead. October 21-22, Orionids: This is a medium to strong meteor shower that has been known to produce impressive fireballs. It will appear all night, closer and brighter than usual. Look in very early October and you’ll see Mars alongside the full “Harvest Moon,” and by mid-October the red planet will be rising at sunset. Uranus is an ice giant, meaning that it comprises a rocky core covered by an “icy” mass of water, ammonia, and methane. Bear in mind, however, that charts like this one are broken down by month—so, what if Planet X is visible for half of the month? On that date they’ll be just 0.5º degrees apart, and appear to shine as one to naked eyes. © 2020 Forbes Media LLC. What if you’re searching for Mercury in late November, when it appears in the morning (pre-dawn) sky?

In 2020, that means March 9, when it appears with Venus. So, each phase of the Moon has its advantages and disadvantages, and it all depends on your personal goals. What does it look like? Try your luck in the pre-dawn hours of October 22. In fact, it’s now a dazzling sight for early-risers.

The night of May 4-5 is expected to be optimal, though it should be active from April 19 until May 28. January 27, Conjunction of Venus and Neptune: You’ll need a telescope for this one, since Neptune is not visible to the naked eye. If you look for the planet tonight (April 24), Venus will pass just to the right of the constellation Taurus. You can see how it looked here!

Exactly what you’re seeing depends on in what direction you’re looking in the night sky, and when.
March 9, Conjunction of Venus and Uranus. The night of August 11-12 is projected to be the peak in 2020, but you can also try to spot meteors in the days before and after. For one thing, Mercury tends to appear low on the horizon. A waxing crescent Moon appears below it on the 16th and then above it on the 17th.

Or, if you belong to as astronomy club, you can ask for help from more experienced members. Saturn is the bright object immediately to Jupiter’s east (left). For one thing, it’s the windiest planet in our solar system.

Its famous great Red Spot? Look for variable star Mira, shining at its brightest.Conditions are ideal for the Orionid meteor shower. There are two full moons in October – on the 1st and the 31st. If you have a telescope, challenge yourself to find not only the planet itself but also its details and features. Of course, you still need to have a general idea of where to look. First up: Jupiter. All Rights Reserved. Like Saturn, Uranus has rings, and it also has 27 moons (that we know of!).

Of course, any planet is technically visible depending on where you’re standing, but these five can be seen with just the naked eye. Look first for the brilliant Jupiter in the southern sky.

It’ll be quite dim by the end of the month and becomes the faintest of the five brightest planets.

I suggest checking In-The-Sky to get precise timings for your precise location. It has a volcanic landscape and is covered in acidic clouds. In the final sections, I discuss the phases of the Moon and how that affects your stargazing, and I briefly go over finderscopes, a tool that will help you locate things if you’re using a telescope. Despite its relatively large size, Uranus is very difficult to see with the naked eye, and without technological help, it pretty much just looks like a star.

There’s something so fundamental and human about the sense of awe and wonder that planets, stars, moons, and nebulae inspire in us. This is definitely not an exhaustive list!

Finally, Venus appears to have phases like the Moon. You’ll need a fairly powerful telescope and some dark skies to get a view of it. I also recommend consulting this handy Uranus Finder Chart, which traces the path of Uranus along the ecliptic.

So get yourself behind any backyard telescope—though prepare to see only a glimpse.

You can use the star maps here (Northern Hemisphere) and here (Southern Hemisphere) to figure out Pluto’s location in the night sky.

June 12, Conjunction of Mars and Neptune.

Jupiter and Saturn have been shining brightly all summer.

I’ve just checked it for my location tonight: The results? 2020 is already well underway, so let’s get started! Write the following dates on your calendar for viewing Mercury: Mercury is small, speedy, and close to the Sun, and it can be very tricky to locate.

Next, I discuss each planet and its visibility throughout the year. Generally speaking, there are five “visible” planets in our solar system. Doesn’t that just mean that you can’t see the Moon in the night sky at all? It starts the month in Taurus and moves into Gemini around the 24th. December 21, Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn.

Almost certainly. People have been stargazing for millennia, using the sky as a sort of map for navigation, creating stories and mythologies about the stars, and wondering what it would be like to travel the galaxy. This site contains a wealth of information on the night sky. December 13-14, Geminids: This awesome annual shower can produce up to 120 meteors per hour! At its apex, it may produce around 20 meteors per hour. Pay attention to the dates of greatest elongation.
Once you’ve spotted the brighter planet Venus, you’ll know that Uranus can’t be far. December 14: total solar eclipse: This eclipse traces a path across part of South America; at least a partial eclipse can be seen in much of South America and southern Africa. Stellarium also provides a list of what planets are visible on a given night. The Dog Star? You’ll be able to use the brighter planets Venus, Mercury, and Mars to help you locate Neptune nearby.

Jupiter will be at its biggest and brightest in the sky tonight (July 14) as the planet reaches opposition, the point in its orbit where it's almost directly opposite the sun in our sky. July 20, Saturn at Opposition: Less than a week later, Saturn makes an impressive appearance. The Whole Sky images show the entire sky as a big round picture.

The night of a New Moon (or the nights just before/after) is an excellent time to try observing dim, deep-sky objects such as star clusters and galaxies.

Now that’s a valuable perspective on life, the Solar System and everything else that nobody should ever underestimate. It may take a bit of practice to get used to these pictures, but after a while you will find them very useful. Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.
